In 1993, they started adopting both Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global Information System (GIS) technologies in their farm operation. Application of both GPS and GIS are generally referred to as precision agriculture since the techniques allow data collection at a resolution of a few square feet within a field rather than individual fields. The data collection and interpretation have dramatically changed the management of the farm and has allowed the brothers to manage their crops and fields towards higher yields and better returns. At present, virtually all of their farm machinery is equipped with computers and GPS receivers to collect variables like yield and record distribution of inputs across the land.
About the Owners
The 3 principle managers are Wayne, Gary, and Daryl Wagner. Even though they all work for a common goal, each brother brings a unique strength to the farm organization.
Wayne, the oldest, specializes in Marketing. His job is to sell the products we raise for the best possible price, whether it is through production contracts, hedging, options, LDP’s, or other methods.
Gary, the middle, works with the financial and field record keeping. His job is to determine the “true cost of production” so Wayne can market the crops we raise at the correct levels. Gary is also the farm computer support person, he processes, analyses, and writes all prescription maps used in the fields.
Daryl, the youngest, utilizes his extensive knowlege in machinery maintenance. He duties are to make sure the machinery line is well-maintained and all scheduled maintenance jobs are completed on schedule.
